vṛttaṃ yatnena saṃrakṣed

Subhashita

vṛttaṃ yatnena saṃrakṣed vittamāyāti yāti ca |

akṣīṇo vittataḥ kṣīṇo vṛttatastu hato hataḥ ||

 

One should protect his ‘sheela’ (good character) with efforts (not his wealth), money can be earned and lost (i.e. money is not stable, you have it today tomorrow you may lose it). But a wealthy person without a good character is as good as dead.
